Diffusion Tensor Imaging

DTI is a novel imaging technique to visualize how the entire brain is wired, in contrast to histological technicques which have extremely limited coverage and are not applicable for longitudinal human studies.

Current DTI techniques are limited to tracing large nerve fibers at los spatial resolution. Fiber projections into gray matter tissues and fiber crossings or merging cannot be resolved. Improvement in DTI imaging and processing techniques can overcome these limitations and will have widespread implications.

Efforts are underway to facilitate high resolution visualization of the neural arrangement for better structural and functional understanding of the brain.
